VALE 26973 WO1 ROBERT WOOD
One of our founding members, Bob Wood, passed away on 14 May 2013. Bob was aged 77 and died suddenly at his home in Bowral following a heart attack. Our deepest sympathy goes to his widow, Marilyn, and their children and grandchildren.
Bob served in the Australian Regular Army from 10 October 1952 until 17 January 1982, when he retired as a WO1after 30 years’ service. He served initially in 4 RAR before seeing the light and transferring to Intelligence in 1956. Bob’s overseas’ service included Malaya and Singapore during the Malayan Emergency and again during the Confrontation. He served in South Vietnam as a WO2 with Detachment 1st Division Intelligence Unit. His Australian postings included 13 National Service Training Battalion and various Signals Intelligence and other Intelligence units. He also saw service on detachment to Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy ships in the Far East. Bob was awarded an impressive 11 service/campaign medals during his service.
Bob was a member of Kingsgrove RSL Sub Branch at the time of his death. He joined the Sub Branch in 1972 and served as Secretary in 1982-83.
The current President of Kingsgrove RSL, Alan Barnes, and three members travelled to Bowral for Bob’s funeral on 17 May 2013. Alan conducted a very dignified and professional RSL Tribute ceremony. Six of our own members: Bruce, David B, Ray, Rod, Terry and Tony participated. The family engaged a bugler to play the Last Post, which added solemnity to the ceremony.
Bob was a proud and dedicated soldier and family man. We offer our sincere condolences to Marilyn and the family.
